Turkey’s 54-years of European Adventure.

The partnership agreement, application for membership of the Customs Union, candidate status, and the start of negotiations. Here are Turkey’s 54-years of European adventure.

While Turkey’s European Union since 1963 (EU) is perhaps the most challenging adventure twist, it is debated whether Turkish Foreign Policy; which started 54 years ago, at the time of the partnership agreement signed with the European Economic Community (EEC) which has now ended the European journey as the Turkısh people now are bored and frustrated wıth a total nervous war in politics.

Finally, after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s statement “Make your decision” to the EU, European leaders met at the EU Summit in Brussels on the 19th and 20th of October 2017. In recent years, the Western values, human rights, democracy, and the suspension of negotiations on Turkey as they are accused well away from the rule of law, including the different options on the table.

In retrospect, it seems to be full of ups and downs in the chronology of Turkey-EU. Milestones in EU-Turkey relations are as follows:

Turkey signed a partnership agreement with the European Economic Top

Turkey formally applied for full membership. The EU Commission reported that the union could not accept a new member for that period, but recommended improving relations so that accession negotiations could be opened at a later date.

After three years of negotiations, the Customs Union Agreement entered into force between the EU and Turkey. Turkey’s customs union then took an essential step towards the objective of integration with the EU; it adds dimension to bilateral relations.

Turkey officially gained candidate status as The European Council, at the Helsinki Summit in December, following the Commission’s report. Turkey has announced that it is a candidate country for EU membership.

Providing a road map for Turkey’s EU accession process, “EU – Turkey Accession Partnership ‘was adopted. The Turkish government, on March 19, reflecting the Accession Partnership, Turkey’s National Program on the Adoption of the Acquis (NPAA), was adopted.

Accession Partnership, Turkey, has entered an intensive political reform process in line with the objective of harmonization with the European Union. Between 2001 and 2004, eight harmonization packages and two constitutional packages were passed by parliament.

A new turning point for Turkey, December 17, 2004, at the Brussels Summit, Turkey was judged sufficient to meet the political criteria substantially and was decided to begin the negotiations.

On October 3, full membership negotiations officially began.

In the intervening 12 years, Turkey’s EU membership process is another tangible milestone that could not be noted on behalf. 16 of the 35 chapters have been opened so far, and only one has been completed. The negotiation process has actually stopped. The parties cannot reach a consensus on which chapters will be opened and which ones should be closed.

Obstruction of the process between the EU and Turkey attributed to many economic and political reasons. Turkey’s budget deficit, external debt, and the unemployment rate are still below the EU average. Turkey’s 15 years of governing AKP, even if a determination endeavor for EU membership ıs in the first year of government. Led by Erdogan in Turkey in recent years, there was thought to be moving away from European values. Press and freedom of expression, the rule of law, separation of powers issues such as transparency and the EU’s main criticisms towards Turkey. The state of Emergency in the process enacted after the coup attempt occurred in Turkey has increased the dosage of these criticisms.

Additionally, from my point of view, these criticisms might be significant problems determined by Europe, but I firmly believe that these values mentioned above are very significant for Turkey and the country’s citizens. Turkey will be improving itself to become a more developed and stable country to take its place in the EU.
