The world we are living in right now is influenced by new technology everyday. Just take a look at your home; we have around us  devices that make our life way easier.

Technology is advancing at a very high speed, which is both a good and a bad thing, the latter being: global warming, higher  income inequality, the extinction of many animal and plants  species etc. By 2050 it is said that the population number will be of 9 billion people. Natural resources will not be enough for everyone, so here is where innovations come into help.

The first interesting thing that awaits us in the future is the colonisation of other planets. It is sad to think that the planet we are living on right now is being destroyed by us; we already passed the threshold and it is late to stop this mass destruction. Even if we could be  able to stop it, we are getting more and more at a high rate. The planet which suits the best for future colonisation is Mars. It is not just a science fiction movie’s script, it is already a project in the making.

Most of us  cannot live without the internet today, but actually just half of the population is connected and has access to it. Google is trying to solve this problem and making internet available for everyone by using helium balloons. The balloons are made to float high in the stratosphere, around 20 km above sea level, which is perfect because it is not interfering with air traffic nor bad weather conditions. The balloons are powered by a solar panel and each of them  has an antenna which relays the internet signals transmitted from the ground.

The majority of us have seen the movie “Back in the Future” where flying cars are presented: well, it is something taken into consideration. Humans will take over the skies, going to work or to university flying, since there are already companies that created designs of such cars and even presented them.

Also, this is not the only change that might occur in the car industry: another helpful innovation will be Solar Panel Technology. Solar panels  are already used in the tiles of building roofs. Now they will be present in car roofs as well, in such a way they can  power the car making  the battery last longer.

In the medical sector a “smart needle’’ is being studied by scientists in the UK. Its usage can  make easier the cancer detection in patients, and in addition to this it is anxiety-reducing, giving the fact that a person does not  need to wait a lot to get the results. The Raman smart needle can measure the molecular changes associated with disease in tissues and cells at the end of the needle,” said Professor Nick Stone, leader of the project, from the University of Exeter. “Provided we can reach a lump or bump of interest with the needle tip, we should be able to assess if it is healthy or not.”

Another medical improvement that will be helpful both for doctors and patients is the smart toothbrush, that can send data to your dentist. This device could help to scan the teeth and detect the presence of cavities or other unpleasant diseases. In this way people won’t need to waste time by  staying in line just for a dentist  appointment, but they will have the possibility of  doing it from home and then receive the results from the stomatologist. Also, the anxiety of going to the doctor’s cabinet just for a control will disapear.

A thing similar to the toothbrush could be the smart mirrors, able to scan your body and detect health problems, or even tell you what your organism  is in need for (vitamins, for example). Again, they  could help us to get in touch faster with a doctor, but also to understand what to change in our routine, adding the practice of a sport or changing our eating habits.

Elon Musk is the talk of the world right now, since he is adding innovations in different sectors. Hyperloop, a company backed up by Musk, is planning to  realize hyper-fast trains, that could help us travel in way much less time. The first planned route is going to be Los Angeles-San Francisco. The distance between 2 countries would be the same as travelling just between 2 towns.

Passing to robotic exoskeletons, they could be helpful not just for the military to make soldiers even stronger, but they would be life-changing also for disabled people, giving them freedom and a chance to have an easier life.

In the introduction of this article, I have touched the problem of the rapid growth of the population and how there is going to be a shortage of natural resources; scientists are now working on creating lab-grown meats, in this way there could be positive effects not just in the diet  of humans, but also in the ecological field.

Now, by ending this article, I would like to focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI),which is not that developed yet. We are nowhere near the life presented in movies like “Blade Runner” or “Chappie”, and right now we can use only the basic AI functions. Back in the 1970’s there were predictions that around 2020 AI would have been highly developed, but also that Mars and the Moon would be colonised. We cannot deny that we have achieved great things, but the robotic devices we use today can only be automized by humans. A revolution in the science world would be an artificial neural network, in which robots would not just follow some instructions but would actually draw their own conclusions, the same as the human brain. However, if this will ever happen, it will have a dramatic effect on society.

It is interesting to see how fast technology is being developed, but the question is: could all this at one point turn against us? Could this mean the beginning of an end?We will find out the answer sooner or later.
